sxema reinterprets post-soviet architecture in 3D printed knitted accessories

3D printed accessories with Russian “panelki” aesthetics

moscow-based sxema collective collaborated with a local kintwear factory to reinterpret the typical post-soviet architecture in a unique setting 3D printed fashion collection of accessories. inspired by the Russian panelki atmosphere, the series offers arrangements of knit accessories including scarves, hats and balaclavas, while using the principles of generative design. the models are built in 3D and put in a jacquard machine. thus, we automate the production of clothing and the entire creative process.

Artificial intelligence as an impartial designer

The sxema project started as an investigative experiment of the architectural neural network. the team trained styleganv2, used the official NVIDIA tensorflow implementation, and wrote an interface to explore the capabilities of the network. Then the designers selected ten thousand images of typical post-Soviet architecture, and the AI system constructed an average view of “panelki”.

then, sxema began to develop its ideas further, drawing more and more inspiration from generative design. “By adjusting the properties of AI, we discovered that it can be an independent actor in the artistic process. the AI designer is not a partisan of any clichés or opinions, he is able to create very unusual and unexpected combinations and adornments and we have started to apply it as placement and allover prints for them. 3d clothing, ‘ the team shares. “We think this approach to design is what the future will look like”, they add.
