“Fragments of the ritual performed by me…” Our friends at The Film Stage have unveiled a trailer for an intriguing animated short from Chile called Los Huesos, premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival in a few weeks. This is the last work of the Chilean experimental animators Joaquín Cociña & Cristóbal León (they made The house of the wolf recently) and it is produced by the horror director Ari Aster. What is their new 14-minute short film about? “Shot on a 16mm Bolex, the short is a fictional tale of the world’s first stop-motion animated film. 1901 and excavated in 2021 as Chile drafts a new constitution, the footage documents a ritual performed by a girl who appears to use human corpses. Appear in the ritual Diego Portales and Jaime Guzmán, central figures in the construction of authoritarian and oligarchic Chile. Tim fain, a collaborator of Philip Glass and an exquisite violinist. We don’t know when this short will debut online, as it will likely first play at a festival for a while. Get a first look below.

Using human corpses and summoning the spirits of two cursed Secretaries of State, a young girl performs a ritual to free the Kingdom of Chile from its feudal heritage.Los Huesos was born out of fiction: a series of film tapes and mummified body parts appear in an excavation, ”the directors say. “The film material discovered turns out to be the world’s first stop-motion animated film. Dated 1901, this film was produced in Chile a few years before the first known European and North American animations. ” Los Huesos, which translates to Bones, is written, directed and hosted by Chilean filmmakers Joaquín Cociña & Cristóbal Leon, who made his directorial debut with the film The house of the wolf (La casa lobo) in 2018. They also directed many other short films. This one is presented in preview at the Venice Film Festival 2021 in the Orizzonti section. No official release is planned yet – stay tuned for more.
